(Annual Membership £12 per person; Non-Members £3 per person per meeting payable on the door ) Wednesday, 25th January 2023 Moated Sites in the Vale of York: "Pawns in the Game of Thrones!" Speaker: Jon Kenny Community Archaeology projects at Skipwith and Hook in the southern Vale of York have been throwing new light on Medieval Moated Sites. This talk will both describe the work at these sites and how these moated sites might have fitted into broader sets of sites and monuments along the rivers Ouse and Derwent. It was here that influential people in medieval society built a few castles, palaces, monasteries, colleges and of course moated sites. All competing with each other for power, prestige and influence in their own "Game of Thrones!" Wednesday, 22nd February 2023 "The Life and Times of Admiral Sir Tancred Robinson" Speaker: John North We'll hear about his career at sea in the Royal Navy of the 18th century; battles against the French and Spanish, his feud with his family, his foray into local politics and a little of what was happening in the Village at the time.
Wednesday, 29th March 2023 "True Life Tales of Tudor York" Speaker: Tony Morgan In this engaging talk, local author Tony Morgan will tell the stories behind some of York's most famous and less famous Tudor residents and events. Expect Lord Mayors and martyrs, rebels and paupers, successes and disasters. If you like your history to be well researched and entertaining, this is the talk for you!!
Wednesday, 25th April 2023 "Now You See It - Now You Don't. The Changing Streetscape of York, (Part One) Speaker: Ian Drake This talk looks at images of the City of York from the earliest drawings to modern photographs. It plots the many changes that have taken place through the centuries, concentrating on street scenes that will be familiar to most members of the audience.
Wednesday, 31st May 2023 "In Sickness and in Health - The Story of Health Care in York Through The Ages" Speaker: Dr. Neil Moran This illustrated talk will look at each period in the history of our City. For each period, there will be a description of the illnesses encountered; the people responsible for providing the care; the range of treatments available, and where those treatments were provided. A few of the images shown are not for the faint-hearted!!
Wednesday, 27th September 2023 "The Baedeker Raids" Speaker: Malcolm Brooke Why was York a target? How active were the RAF in defence? What happened to the 11.30p.m. troop train? What is the difference between "repeated" and "repudiated"? Why was Gainsborough bombed that night: Where is York's last bomb crater? These and many other questions will be answered during the presentation - which includes a musical "Then & Now" sequence.
Wednesday, 25th October 2023 "Guy Fawkes" Speaker: Tony Morgan On 5th November, each year we celebrate, with bonfires and fireworks, the failure of the Gunpowder Plot. But what really happened? In this engaging talk, Tony Morgan will discuss Guy Fawkes's background in Tudor York, the history behind the Gunpowder Plot and the myriad of Yorkshire Connections.
